What Is Qurbani (Udhiyah)?

Qurbani (Arabic: قُرْبَانِي, also called Udhiyah — أُضْحِيَّة) is the ritual animal sacrifice performed during the three days of Eid al-Adha (10th–13th Dhul Hijjah). It commemorates the supreme trial of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was commanded by Allah ﷻ to sacrifice his son Isma’il (AS) — a trial he passed with complete submission. Before the sacrifice, Allah ﷻ substituted a ram, honouring Ibrahim’s devotion.

The word Udhiyah is derived from the Arabic root ḍuhā (ضُحَى), meaning forenoon — the time when the sacrifice is performed. Qurbani comes from the root qurb (قُرْب), meaning closeness — because this act draws the believer closer to Allah ﷻ.

Innā a’ṭaynāka al-kawthar · Faṣalli li-rabbika wa-nḥar
"Indeed, We have granted you al-Kawthar. So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].”
📖 Quran · Surah Al-Kawthar (108:1–2) — Direct Quranic command for Udhiyah

The majority of Islamic scholars understand wa-nḥar ("and sacrifice”) in this verse as a command for Udhiyah. Additionally, Surah Al-Hajj (22:34) states that Allah ﷻ has appointed for every nation a ritual of sacrifice, so that His name is mentioned over the livestock He has provided.

"Whoever has the means and does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our place of prayer.”
📚 Ibn Majah 3123 · Authenticated by Al-Hakim and Al-Albani · Strongest Hadith supporting Wajib position

⚖️ Nisab Threshold & Eligibility

Qurbani is obligatory (Hanafi) or strongly recommended (majority) for a Muslim who:

  1. Is a free, adult, sane Muslim (mukallaf)
  2. Is not a musafir (traveller) — though the Hanafi school adds this condition; others do not
  3. Possesses wealth equal to or exceeding the Nisab threshold on any of the three days of Eid

The Nisab for Qurbani is the same as the Zakat Nisab. However, Madhabs differ on which metal determines the threshold:

  • Hanafi: Uses the silver Nisab (595g of silver) — the lower threshold, meaning more Muslims qualify as obligated.
  • Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali: Use the gold Nisab (85g of gold) — a higher threshold.

Critically, unlike Zakat, no full Hawl (one lunar year) is required for Qurbani in the Hanafi school. Possessing Nisab on even one of the three days of Eid al-Adha is sufficient. For live Nisab values, visit our Zakat Calculator.

🐄 Animal Requirements by Madhab

The Shari’ah has set precise conditions for the animal to be valid for Qurbani. An animal that does not meet these conditions renders the sacrifice invalid.

The Hanafi Madhab holds that Qurbani is valid only on the 10th, 11th, and 12th of Dhul Hijjah (3 days). The other three Madhabs extend this to include the 13th. It is a consensus that night-time sacrifice is makruh (disliked) though valid.

🥩 How to Distribute Qurbani Meat

The Prophet ﷺ instructed that Qurbani meat be divided into three equal portions:

Neighbours & Friends
For neighbours (Muslim and non-Muslim), relatives, and friends. Strengthens community bonds.
🤲
The Poor & Needy
For the fuqara (poor) and masakin (needy). Giving more here is especially praiseworthy. Raw meat preferred.

"So eat of them and feed the distressed and the poor.”
Key rulings on distribution:
  • Raw meat must be given to the poor — cooked food may not reach those who need it most.
  • Donating the entire Qurbani to the poor is permissible and narrated as a virtuous act.
  • The hides (skin) should also be given as charity — they cannot be sold to pay the butcher.
  • The butcher must be paid separately; giving meat as payment for slaughter services is not permissible in the Hanafi, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools.

Note: The person performing the sacrifice should face Qiblah, lay the animal on its left side, and recite Bismillah clearly before the cut.

👼 Qurbani on Behalf of the Deceased

It is permissible in all four Madhabs to perform Qurbani on behalf of deceased parents, grandparents, and relatives. This is considered a form of Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity) that benefits the deceased:

  • Hanafi: The reward (thawaab) of the sacrifice definitely reaches the deceased, as evidenced by the Prophet ﷺ performing Udhiyah on behalf of himself and his family, including those who would follow him in his Ummah after his death.
  • Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali: Also permissible as a charitable act. The intention should be clearly made for the deceased.
"O Allah, this is on behalf of Muhammad and the family of Muhammad and the Ummah of Muhammad.”
📚 Abu Dawud 2792 · The Prophet ﷺ sacrificed two rams — one for himself and his family, one on behalf of his Ummah

❓ Common Questions

Qurbani 2026 — Frequently Asked Questions

Is Qurbani (Udhiyah) obligatory (Wajib) in Islam?
In the Hanafi Madhab, Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) for every free, sane, adult Muslim who possesses wealth equal to or exceeding the silver Nisab on the days of Eid al-Adha. Intentionally omitting it without valid excuse is sinful. In the Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali Madhabs, it is a Sunnah Mu’akkadah — strongly encouraged and discouraged to omit for one who has the means, though technically not sinful to omit. Our calculator above determines your status based on your Madhab.
What is the Nisab for Qurbani 2026?
The Nisab for Qurbani follows the Zakat Nisab. Hanafi scholars use the silver Nisab: 595g of silver. At ~$0.96/g (2026 estimates), this is approximately $570 USD. Other Madhabs use the gold Nisab: 85g of gold. At ~$103/g, this is approximately $8,750 USD. Use our calculator above to input today’s prices in your currency for a precise threshold.
When is Qurbani 2026? Can I check the exact date?
Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected around 16 June 2026 (10 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH). Qurbani is valid on the 10th, 11th, 12th (Hanafi) and 10th–13th (Maliki, Shafi’i, Hanbali) of Dhul Hijjah. Exact dates depend on moon sighting — confirm with IslamicFinder or your local Masjid.
How many shares does a cow or camel have for Qurbani?
A cow, buffalo, ox, or camel = 7 shares. A sheep or goat = 1 share (counts as a full Qurbani for one person or household). All four Sunni Madhabs agree on this division, based on the Hadith of Jabir ibn Abdullah (RA): "We slaughtered on the day of Hudaybiyyah with the Prophet ﷺ — seven people for a camel and seven for a cow.” (Muslim 1318).
Can I perform Qurbani on behalf of my deceased parents?
Yes — this is permissible and praiseworthy in all four Sunni Madhabs. You may include a deceased relative’s name when making the intention, or dedicate a full share of a cow/camel to them. According to the Hanafi Madhab, the reward (thawaab) is transmitted to the deceased, as this is an extension of sadaqah (charity) on their behalf. See IslamQA on this topic.
Can I pay for Qurbani to be done in another country?
Yes — it is permissible to appoint a charity or organisation to perform Qurbani on your behalf in another country. This is valid in all four Madhabs based on the general principle that an agent (wakeel) may fulfil acts of worship on the principal’s behalf. Ensure the organisation uses reputable methods and that the sacrifice is performed during the valid days of Qurbani.
What is the difference between Qurbani and Aqiqah?
Qurbani is performed during Eid al-Adha (10–13 Dhul Hijjah) to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim AS. Aqiqah is performed upon the birth of a child — ideally on the 7th day — as an act of gratitude: 2 animals for a boy, 1 for a girl. They are entirely separate acts of worship. One cannot substitute for the other. If you missed Aqiqah as a child, it can be performed at any age.
Should I not cut my nails/hair after 1 Dhul Hijjah if I intend Qurbani?
Yes — it is an established Sunnah that one who intends to perform Qurbani should refrain from cutting hair and nails from the 1st of Dhul Hijjah until after the sacrifice. This is based on a Hadith narrated by Umm Salamah RA (Muslim 1977): "When you see the new moon of Dhul Hijjah and one of you intends to offer a sacrifice, let him refrain from [cutting] his hair and nails.” This applies to the person offering the sacrifice, not the rest of the family.
