🕋 Islamic Context

What is Eid al-Adha?

Eid al-Adha (عيد الأضحى) — the Festival of Sacrifice — is the greater of the two annual Islamic celebrations. It falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and commemorates the supreme act of obedience and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ, who was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail ﷺ. As Ibrahim ﷺ prepared to fulfill this command, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram — affirming that the intention and submission were accepted.

“And We called to him, ‘O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.’ Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.”

📖 Quran, Surah As-Saffat 37:104–105

Eid al-Adha also coincides with the culmination of Hajj — the fifth pillar of Islam — when nearly 2–3 million pilgrims gather in Mina to perform the rite of sacrifice after standing at the plains of Arafah.

The Significance of Eid al-Adha in Islam

Eid al-Adha, known in Arabic as عيد الأضحى, is often called the Greater Eid (Eid al-Kabir) because of its deep connection to both the Hajj pilgrimage and the profound story of sacrifice and submission. While Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of Ramadan’s month of fasting, Eid al-Adha commemorates one of the most dramatic moments in Abrahamic prophetic history — and calls every Muslim, wherever they are, to reflect on the meaning of sacrifice, gratitude, and nearness to Allah.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The greatest day in the sight of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, is the Day of Sacrifice, then the Day of al-Qarr (11 Dhul Hijjah)” (Abu Dawud, 1765). This hadith underscores why Muslims around the world place enormous spiritual importance on this occasion — it is not merely a cultural festival, but one of the most sacred observances in the Islamic calendar.

The Day of Arafah — The Pinnacle of the Islamic Year

One day before Eid al-Adha, on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, is Yawm Arafah — widely considered the most virtuous single day of the Islamic year. For Hajj pilgrims, standing on the plains of Arafah (Wuquf) is the very heart of the pilgrimage — the Prophet ﷺ declared: “Hajj is Arafah” (Tirmidhi, 889).

For Muslims not performing Hajj, fasting on this day is of immense reward. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on Arafah and replied: “It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year” (Sahih Muslim, 1162). This makes the fast of Arafah one of the most rewarding single fasts a Muslim can perform — surpassing even most days of Ramadan in terms of expiation.

Understanding Qurbani — The Ritual Sacrifice

Qurbani (also written Qurban or Udhiyah) is the ritual slaughter of a livestock animal performed between Eid prayer and the end of 13 Dhul Hijjah. It is:

  • Wajib (obligatory) according to the Hanafi madhab for every adult Muslim who possesses the Nisab amount
  • Sunnah Mu’akkadah (confirmed Sunnah) according to the Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali madhabs
  • Highly recommended for every household, with at minimum one share per adult
  • Performed by slaughtering a sheep, goat, cow, buffalo, or camel according to Islamic guidelines

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The son of Adam does not do any deed on the Day of Sacrifice that is dearer to Allah than the shedding of blood” (Ibn Majah, 3126). This establishes Qurbani as one of the most beloved acts of worship on Eid al-Adha.

For those unable to perform Qurbani locally, it is permissible to donate the cost to a reliable Islamic charity that performs Qurbani on your behalf and distributes the meat to those in need. Respected organisations include Islamic Relief, Human Appeal, and Muslim Aid.

Hajj & Eid al-Adha — The Connection

Eid al-Adha is inseparably linked to the Hajj pilgrimage. In 2026, Hajj will take place from approximately 25–29 May 2026 (8–12 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH). Around 2–3 million pilgrims from across the globe converge on Makkah each year for what is the largest annual human gathering on Earth.

The spiritual synchrony between Hajj and Eid creates a powerful sense of global Muslim unity: while pilgrims circle the Kaaba and stand at Arafah, hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide join the sacred season through fasting, Takbeer, and Qurbani. ❓ FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About Eid al-Adha 2026

When is Eid al-Adha 2026?
Eid al-Adha 2026 is expected to fall on Wednesday, 27 May 2026, corresponding to 10 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH. In some countries that follow local moon sighting, the date may shift to 28 May 2026. The Day of Arafah will be Tuesday, 26 May 2026. Always confirm with your local Islamic authority as dates depend on the official moon sighting.
What is the difference between Eid al-Adha and Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr (Festival of Breaking Fast) celebrates the end of Ramadan and falls on 1 Shawwal. In 2026, it fell on 20 March 2026. Eid al-Adha (Festival of Sacrifice) falls on 10 Dhul Hijjah and commemorates Ibrahim’s willingness to sacrifice his son. Key practical differences: on Eid al-Adha you should NOT eat before prayer (unlike Eid al-Fitr where it is Sunnah to eat dates beforehand), and Qurbani is performed instead of Zakat al-Fitr.
Who is obligated to perform Qurbani?
According to the Hanafi madhab, Qurbani is Wajib (obligatory) for every Muslim who is: (1) sane and adult (post-puberty), (2) not a Hajj pilgrim, and (3) in possession of wealth equal to or exceeding the Nisab amount (approximately the value of 87.48g of gold or 612.36g of silver) after essential needs. According to Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali schools, it is a confirmed Sunnah (highly recommended). Each adult household member should ideally perform their own Qurbani.
Can I donate Qurbani to a charity instead of doing it myself?
Yes — it is valid and widely practiced for Muslims in countries where performing Qurbani locally is difficult or impractical. The scholarly position is that you may authorise an agent (wakeel) — including a charity — to perform the Qurbani on your behalf in another country, even before the end of the Eid days in your own location. Choose a reputable Islamic charity with certified halal slaughter operations, such as Islamic Relief, Human Appeal, or Muslim Aid.
Should I fast on the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah)?
Yes — for Muslims who are NOT performing Hajj, fasting on the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul Hijjah — Tuesday, 26 May 2026) is one of the most rewarding voluntary fasts in the Islamic calendar. The Prophet ﷺ said it expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year. It is not obligatory, but extremely recommended. Pilgrims performing Hajj do NOT fast on this day as they need their strength.
When should I stop cutting my hair and nails before Eid al-Adha?
If you intend to perform Qurbani, you should refrain from cutting your hair or nails from the beginning of Dhul Hijjah (from the sighting of the new moon — around 18 May 2026) until you have offered your Qurbani. This applies to the person performing Qurbani, not necessarily all household members. This is based on an authentic hadith in Sahih Muslim (1977). Once Qurbani is done, you may cut normally.
What are the Ayyam al-Tashreeq and can I fast during them?
Ayyam al-Tashreeq are the 11th, 12th, and 13th of Dhul Hijjah (28, 29, 30 May 2026) — the three days following Eid al-Adha. Fasting on these days is forbidden according to authentic hadith: “The days of Tashreeq are days of eating, drinking, and remembering Allah” (Sahih Muslim, 1141). Qurbani may still be performed during these days if not done on Eid Day itself.
What is the Islamic significance of Hajj in 2026?
In 2026, the Hajj pilgrimage (the 5th pillar of Islam) will take place from approximately 25–29 May 2026 (8–12 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH). The key rite is Wuquf at Arafah on 26 May 2026 (9 Dhul Hijjah). Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. To learn more about Hajj and its supplications, visit our Hajj & Umrah section →
