🕋 Islamic Context
What is Eid al-Adha?
Eid al-Adha (عيد الأضحى) — the Festival of Sacrifice — is the greater of the two annual Islamic celebrations. It falls on the 10th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic lunar calendar, and commemorates the supreme act of obedience and devotion of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ, who was commanded by Allah to sacrifice his beloved son, Ismail ﷺ. As Ibrahim ﷺ prepared to fulfill this command, Allah replaced Ismail with a ram — affirming that the intention and submission were accepted.
“And We called to him, ‘O Ibrahim, you have fulfilled the vision.’ Indeed, We thus reward the doers of good.”
📖 Quran, Surah As-Saffat 37:104–105
Eid al-Adha also coincides with the culmination of Hajj — the fifth pillar of Islam — when nearly 2–3 million pilgrims gather in Mina to perform the rite of sacrifice after standing at the plains of Arafah.

The Significance of Eid al-Adha in Islam
Eid al-Adha, known in Arabic as عيد الأضحى, is often called the Greater Eid (Eid al-Kabir) because of its deep connection to both the Hajj pilgrimage and the profound story of sacrifice and submission. While Eid al-Fitr celebrates the end of Ramadan’s month of fasting, Eid al-Adha commemorates one of the most dramatic moments in Abrahamic prophetic history — and calls every Muslim, wherever they are, to reflect on the meaning of sacrifice, gratitude, and nearness to Allah.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The greatest day in the sight of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, is the Day of Sacrifice, then the Day of al-Qarr (11 Dhul Hijjah)” (Abu Dawud, 1765). This hadith underscores why Muslims around the world place enormous spiritual importance on this occasion — it is not merely a cultural festival, but one of the most sacred observances in the Islamic calendar.
The Day of Arafah — The Pinnacle of the Islamic Year
One day before Eid al-Adha, on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, is Yawm Arafah — widely considered the most virtuous single day of the Islamic year. For Hajj pilgrims, standing on the plains of Arafah (Wuquf) is the very heart of the pilgrimage — the Prophet ﷺ declared: “Hajj is Arafah” (Tirmidhi, 889).
For Muslims not performing Hajj, fasting on this day is of immense reward. The Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on Arafah and replied: “It expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year” (Sahih Muslim, 1162). This makes the fast of Arafah one of the most rewarding single fasts a Muslim can perform — surpassing even most days of Ramadan in terms of expiation.
Understanding Qurbani — The Ritual Sacrifice
Qurbani (also written Qurban or Udhiyah) is the ritual slaughter of a livestock animal performed between Eid prayer and the end of 13 Dhul Hijjah. It is:
- Wajib (obligatory) according to the Hanafi madhab for every adult Muslim who possesses the Nisab amount
- Sunnah Mu’akkadah (confirmed Sunnah) according to the Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali madhabs
- Highly recommended for every household, with at minimum one share per adult
- Performed by slaughtering a sheep, goat, cow, buffalo, or camel according to Islamic guidelines
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The son of Adam does not do any deed on the Day of Sacrifice that is dearer to Allah than the shedding of blood” (Ibn Majah, 3126). This establishes Qurbani as one of the most beloved acts of worship on Eid al-Adha.
For those unable to perform Qurbani locally, it is permissible to donate the cost to a reliable Islamic charity that performs Qurbani on your behalf and distributes the meat to those in need. Respected organisations include Islamic Relief, Human Appeal, and Muslim Aid.
Hajj & Eid al-Adha — The Connection
Eid al-Adha is inseparably linked to the Hajj pilgrimage. In 2026, Hajj will take place from approximately 25–29 May 2026 (8–12 Dhul Hijjah 1447 AH). Around 2–3 million pilgrims from across the globe converge on Makkah each year for what is the largest annual human gathering on Earth.
The spiritual synchrony between Hajj and Eid creates a powerful sense of global Muslim unity: while pilgrims circle the Kaaba and stand at Arafah, hundreds of millions of Muslims worldwide join the sacred season through fasting, Takbeer, and Qurbani.
