What Is Ramadan & Why Do Muslims Fast?
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar (Hijri) calendar and the holiest month in Islam. It commemorates the first revelation of the Holy Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Fasting during Ramadan — known as Sawm — is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for every able-bodied adult Muslim.
“Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”— Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim
🌙 The Month of the Qur’an
Allah ﷻ declares in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185): “The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” Reciting and reflecting on the Qur’an daily is the heart of Ramadan.
🌟 The Night of Power
Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) falls within the last ten odd nights of Ramadan — most likely the 27th night (~16 March 2026). Worship on this single night is greater in reward than a thousand months (83+ years) of worship.
Sawm (Fasting)
Abstaining from food, drink, and intimacy from Fajr to Maghrib every day of Ramadan.
Salah & Tarawih
Performing the five daily prayers and the special night prayers (Tarawih) after Isha throughout the month.
Qur’an Recitation
Completing at least one full recitation of the Qur’an — the Khatm al-Qur’an — before Eid.
Zakat & Charity
Giving generously in Sadaqah; also paying Zakat al-Fitr before Eid prayer so the needy can celebrate.
I’tikaf
Spending the last ten days of Ramadan in seclusion in the masjid, devoted entirely to worship.
