What Is Ramadan & Why Do Muslims Fast?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar (Hijri) calendar and the holiest month in Islam. It commemorates the first revelation of the Holy Qur’an to Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Fasting during Ramadan — known as Sawm — is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is obligatory for every able-bodied adult Muslim.

“Whoever fasts Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his previous sins will be forgiven.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari & Muslim

🌙 The Month of the Qur’an

Allah ﷻ declares in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:185): “The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and clear proofs of guidance and criterion.” Reciting and reflecting on the Qur’an daily is the heart of Ramadan.

🌟 The Night of Power

Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) falls within the last ten odd nights of Ramadan — most likely the 27th night (~16 March 2026). Worship on this single night is greater in reward than a thousand months (83+ years) of worship.

🤲

📖

Completing at least one full recitation of the Qur’an — the Khatm al-Qur’an — before Eid.

💛

Frequently Asked Questions About Ramadan Fasting 2026

Answers to the most searched questions about Ramadan 2026, fasting rules, duas, and more.

Ramadan 2026 (1447 AH) is expected to begin on the evening of Tuesday, 17 February 2026, with the first fast on Wednesday, 18 February. It will end on the evening of Wednesday, 18 March 2026, with Eid al-Fitr expected on 19 or 20 March 2026. Exact dates are subject to official moon sighting in your local region.
The dua (niyyah) for beginning your fast is: “Wa bisawmi ghadinn nawaiytu min shahri Ramadan” — meaning “I intend to keep the fast for tomorrow in the month of Ramadan.” This intention (niyyah) should be made in the heart before Fajr (dawn). Some scholars state the verbal intention is Sunnah but the heart’s intention is what counts.
The most widely narrated Iftar dua is: “Allahumma inni laka sumtu wa bika aamantu wa ‘alayka tawakkaltu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu”“O Allah! I fasted for You, I believe in You, I put my trust in You, and with Your provision I break my fast.” A shorter form is also authentic: “Dhahaba al-zama’u wabtallatil-‘uruqu wa thabata al-ajru in sha’a Allah” (Abu Dawud).
The following actions intentionally performed during fasting hours invalidate the fast: eating or drinking, intentional vomiting, sexual intercourse or intimate relations, taking medicine or injections that provide nourishment, and smoking. Accidental acts (forgetting one is fasting and eating/drinking) do NOT break the fast according to the majority of scholars — you simply continue your fast.
Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Power) is hidden within the last ten odd nights of Ramadan (21st, 23rd, 25th, 27th, or 29th). According to many hadith, the 27th night is most prominent — expected to fall on Monday, 16 March 2026. However, Muslims are encouraged to seek it across all odd nights of the last ten days. The recommended dua is: “Allahumma innaka ‘afuwwun tuhibbul ‘afwa fa’fu ‘anni.”
Ramadan 2026 is expected to be 30 days, running from the first fast on 18 February to the last fast on 18 March 2026. The Islamic lunar month can be either 29 or 30 days depending on moon sighting, so the final number may change slightly based on local moon sighting authorities.
Zakat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is a mandatory charity that every Muslim must pay on behalf of themselves and their dependants before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. It purifies the fasting person from inadvertent errors during Ramadan and provides food for the poor to celebrate Eid. It can be given from the start of Ramadan but must be paid before the Eid prayer to be valid.
