Islam & Medicine: Seeking Both Cure and Creator

Islam wholeheartedly embraces medicine as a divine gift, pairing physical treatment with sincere supplication (du’a).

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it” (Abu Dawud 3855). Surgery, when medically necessary, is entirely permissible — even obligatory — in Islamic jurisprudence when it preserves life or prevents serious harm.

Yet the believing Muslim knows that the surgeon’s skill is only the immediate cause (sabab); the true Healer is Allah alone. That is why the Quran declares: وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ“And when I am ill, it is He who cures me” (Quran 26:80). Pairing medical treatment with heartfelt du’a is the hallmark of the Prophetic tradition.

📌

Quick Tip: Read all duas aloud (or in your heart) with full presence and tawakkul (trust in Allah). Recite Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) and Al-Fatiha before entering the operating theatre for comprehensive spiritual protection.

Sunnah During Illness: The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say “Bismillah” three times, then read “A’udhu bi’izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir” seven times while placing a hand over the area of pain (Sahih Muslim 2202). This practice is highly recommended during post-surgical pain management.

Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to the most common questions about Islamic practice surrounding surgery and illness.

Yes. Surgery is not only permissible (halal) in Islam but may be obligatory (wajib) when it preserves life or prevents serious harm. The Prophet ﷺ commanded: “Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it” (Abu Dawud 3855). Preserving life (hifz al-nafs) is one of the five essential objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid al-Shariah). Scholars at IslamQA.info and SeekersGuidance.org confirm this consensus.
There is no single obligatory dua, but scholars recommend combining: (1) Ayat al-Kursi (2:255) for spiritual protection, (2) Al-Fatiha recited as ruqyah, (3) the dua for difficulty — “Allahumma la sahla illa ma ja’altahu sahla…” (Ibn Majah 3974), and (4) placing full trust in Allah with the tawakkul verse (Quran 11:56). Together these cover protection, reliance, and ease. Read them ideally after performing wudu and a brief nafl prayer.
Absolutely. Du’a made for a Muslim in his or her absence (du’a al-ghā’ib) is encouraged in the Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ said: “The supplication of a Muslim for his brother in his absence is answered” (Sahih Muslim 2733). The most powerful supplication for a patient is “As’alullāhal-ʿaẓīma…” (Tirmidhi 2083) repeated seven times. Family should also give sadaqah (charity) on behalf of the patient, as this is known to repel harm.
Islam provides tremendous flexibility for the ill. Key rulings include: (1) Tayammum (dry ablution with soil or a clean surface) is valid when water cannot be used, (2) Salah can be performed lying down with gestures if standing or sitting is impossible, (3) prayers may be shortened and combined (qasr and jam’) if travelling for surgery, (4) if even gesture is impossible, the prayer is still an obligation and must be made up later when able. Consult IslamQA.info for specific circumstances.
The Prophet ﷺ prescribed a specific practice for pain: place your hand on the painful area, say “Bismillah” three times, then recite “A’udhu bi’izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir” (I seek refuge in Allah’s might and power from the evil of what I feel and fear) seven times — Sahih Muslim 2202. Additionally, the Dua of Prophet Ayyub — “Rabbi innī massaniyaḍ-ḍurru…” (Quran 21:83) — is a profound supplication for enduring physical hardship during recovery.
The use of general anaesthesia for necessary surgery is permissible by scholarly consensus. Unlike intoxicants, anaesthesia is administered for therapeutic necessity (darura) rather than pleasure. The Fiqh Council of the Muslim World League has affirmed that medically necessary anaesthesia does not violate Islamic law. If a Muslim goes under general anaesthesia, they are in a state akin to sleep — Allah is still their Protector. The intention (niyyah) and duas made before surgery cover the period of unconsciousness.
