✦ Islamic Perspective
Islam & Medicine: Seeking Both Cure and Creator
Islam wholeheartedly embraces medicine as a divine gift, pairing physical treatment with sincere supplication (du’a).
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “Make use of medical treatment, for Allah has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it” (Abu Dawud 3855). Surgery, when medically necessary, is entirely permissible — even obligatory — in Islamic jurisprudence when it preserves life or prevents serious harm.
Yet the believing Muslim knows that the surgeon’s skill is only the immediate cause (sabab); the true Healer is Allah alone. That is why the Quran declares: وَإِذَا مَرِضْتُ فَهُوَ يَشْفِينِ — “And when I am ill, it is He who cures me” (Quran 26:80). Pairing medical treatment with heartfelt du’a is the hallmark of the Prophetic tradition.
Quick Tip: Read all duas aloud (or in your heart) with full presence and tawakkul (trust in Allah). Recite Ayat al-Kursi (Quran 2:255) and Al-Fatiha before entering the operating theatre for comprehensive spiritual protection.
✦ Before Surgery
Dua Before Surgery — For the Patient
These supplications are to be read by the patient before going into surgery, ideally after performing wudu (ablution) and two rak’ahs of nafl prayer.
Allāhumma lā sahla illā mā ja’altahu sahlā, wa anta taj’alul-ḥazna idhā shi’ta sahlā.
Translation: “O Allah, there is no ease except in that which You have made easy, and You make the difficult easy when You will.”
📚 Ibn Majah · Hadith 3974
Innī tawakkaltu ʿalallāhi Rabbī wa Rabbikum. Mā min dābbatin illā huwa ākhidhun bināṣiyatihā.
Translation: “I have placed my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord. There is not a creature but that He holds its forelock.”
Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-hammi wal-ḥazan, wa aʿūdhu bika minal-ʿajzi wal-kasal, wa aʿūdhu bika minal-jubni wal-bukhl, wa aʿūdhu bika min ghalabatid-dayni wa qahrir-rijāl.
Translation: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, and from overwhelming debt and the subjugation of men.”
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari · Hadith 6369✦ For Family & Loved Ones
Dua for a Loved One Having Surgery
While your family member is in surgery, turn to Allah with these powerful intercessions (du’a al-ghā’ib).
Allāhumma Rabban-nāsi, adhhibil-ba’sa washfi, Antash-Shāfī, lā shifā’a illā shifā’uka, shifā’an lā yughādiru saqamā.
Translation: “O Allah, Lord of the people, remove the affliction and heal. You are the Healer; there is no cure except Your cure — a cure that leaves no illness behind.”

As’alullāhal-ʿaẓīma Rabbal-ʿarshil-ʿaẓīmi an yashfiyak.
Translation: “I ask Allah the Magnificent, Lord of the Magnificent Throne, to heal you.”
📌 The Prophet ﷺ stated: whoever recites this seven times for a sick Muslim, if it is not his/her decreed time of death, Allah will heal them. (Tirmidhi 2083)
📚 Tirmidhi · Hadith 2083✦ Ruqyah Sharia’yyah
Quranic Verses for Healing & Shifa

You alone we worship; You alone we ask for help. Guide us along the Straight Path — the path of those You have blessed, not of those You are displeased with, or of those who are astray.”

📗 Quran · At-Tawbah 9:14✦ For the Medical Team
Dua for the Surgeon & Medical Team
It is a beautiful Sunnah practice to make du’a for those who help you. Ask Allah to guide the hands of the surgeon and grant wisdom to the entire team.
Allāhumma ihdi yadayhi wa ʿaqlahu, waj’al fī ʿilmihi barakah, wa yassir lahu amrahu, wa tawalahu biraḥmatik.
Translation: “O Allah, guide his/her hands and mind, place blessing in his/her knowledge, make his/her task easy, and take him/her under Your mercy.”
📌 This compiled supplication draws on the Prophetic tradition of seeking Allah’s guidance for those entrusted with our care. Scholars at IslamQA.info confirm the permissibility and reward of making such personalized du’a.
✦ Post-Surgery Recovery
Dua After Surgery — For Recovery & Shifa
Upon waking from surgery or during the recovery period, these supplications invite Allah’s healing mercy into every moment of convalescence.
Rabbi innī massaniyaḍ-ḍurru wa Anta arḥamur-rāḥimīn.
Translation: “My Lord, indeed adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”
📌 Prophet Ayyub (Job) ﷺ recited this during his years of illness. Allah responded: “So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity” (Quran 21:84). This is one of the most powerful duas for enduring illness and surgical recovery.
📗 Quran · Al-Anbiya 21:83
Alḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī ʿāfānī mimmabtalāka bihī wa faḍḍalanī ʿalā kathīrin mimman khalaqa tafḍīlā.
Translation: “All praise is for Allah who has pardoned me of that which He has afflicted you with, and Who has preferred me over many of those He has created.”
📚 Tirmidhi · Hadith 3431Sunnah During Illness: The Prophet ﷺ taught us to say “Bismillah” three times, then read “A’udhu bi’izzatillahi wa qudratihi min sharri ma ajidu wa uhadhir” seven times while placing a hand over the area of pain (Sahih Muslim 2202). This practice is highly recommended during post-surgical pain management.
