What is the Dua for a Traveller in Islam?

In Islam, making a dua for a traveller (also known as Safar Ki Dua or the travel supplication) is a beloved Sunnah practice established by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Travel carries inherent uncertainty — whether by car, plane, ship, or on foot — and the traveller’s dua is a profound expression of trust in Allah (Tawakkul) and reliance upon His protection.

The Quran itself encourages travel as a means of reflection and worship. Allah says in Surah Az-Zukhruf (43:13–14) that He has subjected transport for us, reminding us to glorify Him whenever we board any vehicle. Building on this, our beloved Prophet ﷺ taught us specific duas to recite at each stage of a journey, from leaving home to arriving at our destination and returning safely.

Whether you are embarking on Hajj or Umrah, a business trip, a family holiday, or even a daily commute, these authentic supplications will act as your spiritual shield and keep you connected to Allah throughout your journey. Why is the Traveller’s Dua Especially Powerful?

The Prophet ﷺ confirmed that the dua of a traveller is among three supplications that are answered without doubt. Travel places a person in a state of need, away from home comforts, which softens the heart and intensifies one’s reliance on Allah — making it one of the best times to make sincere dua.

When to Recite the Dua for a Traveller

A step-by-step Sunnah guide to the correct times for each supplication during your journey.

Step 1 · Before Departure
Pray Two Rak’ah Sunnah
Before setting out, offer two voluntary Rak’ah prayers at home. This Sunnah was narrated in Musnad al-Bazzar and acts as a spiritual shield for your journey.
Step 2 · Leaving Home
Recite Dua #3 at the Door
Bismillah, tawakkaltu ‘ala-llah… — step out of your home with this dua on your lips to be placed under divine protection and have Shaytan turned away.
Step 3 · Boarding Vehicle
Recite Duas #1 & #2 (The Main Travel Dua)
Once seated in your car, plane, or train, say Allahu Akbar three times and then recite the full Safar dua. This is the core Sunnah of the traveller established in Sahih Muslim.
Step 4 · During the Journey
Make Abundant Dhikr & Dua #4
Use the journey for dhikr, reciting Ayatul Kursi, and making personal dua. If dawn arrives during travel, recite Dua #8. Your dua is answered during travel — make the most of this time.
Step 5 · Stopping / Resting
Recite Dua #5 at Each Stop
A’udhu bi kalimāti-llāhi-t-tāmmāti… — whenever you stop at a hotel, campsite, or rest area, recite this dua for protection throughout your stay at that place.
Step 6 · Returning Home
Recite Dua #6 & Pray Two Rak’ah
Āybūna, tā’ibūna, ‘ābidūna, lirabbinā ḥāmidūn… — say this on the way home. Upon entering, pray two more Rak’ah in gratitude for your safe return.

Islamic Etiquettes of Travel (Safar)

Beyond duas, the Prophet ﷺ established a beautiful etiquette of travel that every Muslim should know.

1

Set a Good Intention (Niyyah)

Begin every journey with a pure intention — for work, family, learning, or the sake of Allah. The traveller’s reward depends on their niyyah.

2

Pray Two Rak’ah Before Leaving

The Prophet ﷺ prayed two Sunnah Rak’ah before any journey. This establishes a spiritual foundation before departure.

3

Give Charity Before Departing

Giving Sadaqah before a journey is encouraged as it invites Allah’s barakah and protection. Even a small act of charity amplifies the accepted dua of the traveller.

4

Maintain Salah During Travel

Islam provides concessions — prayers can be shortened (qasr) and combined (jam’) for a traveller covering significant distance. Do not neglect Salah during your journey.

5

Make Abundant Dhikr

Use travel time wisely. Recite Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, Allahu Akbar, and Astaghfirullah. Long journeys are an ideal opportunity for remembrance of Allah.

6

Be Charitable & Kind to Fellow Travellers

Show Islamic character throughout the journey. Help others, be patient with delays, and treat fellow travellers with respect and kindness.

7

Say Farewell Properly

Bid farewell to family with the dua “Astawdi’ukumu-llah” (I entrust you all to Allah). Family members remaining should say this for the departing traveller.

8

Pray Upon Returning

Upon returning home, pray two Rak’ah in gratitude before anything else. The Prophet ﷺ did this consistently as an act of thanksgiving to Allah.

Dua for a Traveller by Transport Type

🚗 Dua for Travelling by Car

Whether commuting to work or going on a road trip, the dua for travelling by car is the same core supplication taught by the Prophet ﷺ. Once you are seated and have fastened your seatbelt, recite Allahu Akbar three times and then say the full Safar dua (#1 above). Driving also provides an excellent opportunity to recite morning adhkar and listen to Quran recitation.

✈️ Dua for Travelling by Plane

Once on board and before the aircraft moves, recite the boarding dua. The Prophet ﷺ’s teaching was specific to mounting any vehicle, and scholars have confirmed this applies to aeroplanes, ships, trains, and all modern transport. Many Muslims also recite Ayatul Kursi for added protection. Fear of flying is completely natural — these duas are your spiritual anchor.

🕋 Dua for Travelling for Hajj & Umrah

Pilgrimage travel carries extra spiritual weight. Alongside the standard travel duas, pilgrims are encouraged to make abundant dua for themselves, their families, and the entire Muslim Ummah throughout the journey.
