What Is the Seerah?

Understanding the biography of the final Prophet and its place in Islamic scholarship.

The word Seerah (سِيرَة) — literally meaning “path” or “way of life” — refers to the recorded biography of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. It is one of the most meticulously preserved life narratives in human history, compiled by Muslim scholars such as Ibn Ishaq, Ibn Hisham, and later Al-Waqidi.

Studying the Seerah is not merely a historical exercise. Allah ﷻ commands believers in the Quran to follow the example of the Prophet ﷺ: “Indeed in the Messenger of Allah you have a beautiful example to follow” (Quran 33:21). The Seerah is the living embodiment of that example.

The Seerah spans 63 years — from the Prophet’s birth in 570 CE in Makkah to his passing in 632 CE in Madinah — covering his childhood, the years before prophethood, the Makkan period, the Hijra, and the Madinan era.

For Muslims, knowledge of the Seerah deepens love for the Prophet ﷺ, enriches understanding of the Quran revealed in specific contexts, and provides a practical model for navigating every dimension of life — family, governance, trade, warfare, and worship.

“There has certainly been for you in the Messenger of Allah an excellent pattern for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day and who remembers Allah often.”

📖 Quran · Surah Al-Ahzab 33:21

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ

“The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it.”

Every Prophet came with the same core message: Tawhid — the oneness of Allah ﷻ. They were chosen men, free from major sin, who conveyed divine revelation faithfully. The Ulul Azm (أولو العزم) — Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, ‘Isa, and Muhammad ﷺ — possessed the highest rank of perseverance and mission.

Lessons from the Seerah

The life of the Prophet ﷺ is a masterclass in patience, leadership, compassion, and unwavering faith.

01
Sabr — Patient Perseverance

Despite 13 years of persecution in Makkah — boycotts, torture of companions, personal loss — the Prophet ﷺ never abandoned his mission. Sabr (patience) is the bedrock of Islamic character.

02
Rahmah — Universal Mercy

At the Conquest of Makkah, those who had tortured and killed his companions were forgiven. “Go,” he said, “you are free.” Rahmah (mercy) was his defining trait — mirroring Allah’s own attribute.

03
Tawakkul — Trust in Allah

When enemies surrounded the cave of Thawr, the Prophet ﷺ comforted Abu Bakr (RA): “Do not grieve — indeed Allah is with us.” Complete reliance on Allah, combined with effort, is the prophetic formula.

04
Sidq — Truthfulness in All Things

Even before prophethood, the Quraysh called him Al-Amin (the Trustworthy). His truthfulness in business, speech, and treaty was legendary — a model for Muslim professionals today.

05
Shura — Consultative Leadership

The Prophet ﷺ regularly consulted his companions on military, political, and community matters. At Uhud and Khandaq, he adopted their counsel. Shura (consultation) is an Islamic governance principle.

06
Tawadu’ — Genuine Humility

Despite being the head of state, the Prophet ﷺ milked his own goat, mended his own shoes, and visited the sick. His humility was not performed — it was the natural expression of a heart devoted entirely to Allah ﷻ.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many Prophets were sent to mankind in total? +
According to an authentic hadith narrated by Abu Dharr (RA) in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad, Allah ﷻ sent approximately 124,000 prophets and 315 messengers (rusul) to humanity throughout history. However, only 25 of these prophets are named explicitly in the Quran. See our 25 Prophets infographic above for the full list.
What is the difference between a Nabi and a Rasul? +
A Nabi (نبي) is a prophet who received divine revelation to convey to his community, generally confirming a previous scripture. A Rasul (رسول) is a messenger who was sent with a new divine book or major law. All Rusul are Anbiya, but not all Anbiya are Rusul. For example, Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and Prophet Muhammad ﷺ were both Anbiya and Rusul. Learn more at IslamQA.
Who are the Ulul Azm — the five greatest Prophets? +
The Ulul Azm (أولو العزم) — “those of strong resolve” — are the five prophets given the highest rank, referenced in Quran 46:35. They are: Nuh (Noah), Ibrahim (Abraham), Musa (Moses), ‘Isa (Jesus), and Muhammad ﷺ. Each endured extraordinary tests and brought major divine books or laws. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the Seal of the Prophets (Khatam al-Nabiyyin) — the last and final messenger.
When was the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ born and when did he pass away? +
Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born in 570 CE (Year of the Elephant) in Makkah, on the 12th of Rabi’ al-Awwal according to the majority scholarly opinion. He passed away on 12 Rabi’ al-Awwal, 11 AH (632 CE), at the age of 63 in Madinah al-Munawwarah. He is buried in the Prophet’s Mosque (Al-Masjid al-Nabawi) in Madinah.
What is the best book to read for learning the Seerah? +
Classical scholars recommend starting with Ibn Hisham’s Sirat Ibn Hisham (an abridgement of Ibn Ishaq’s original Seerah). For modern readers, The Sealed Nectar (Ar-Raheequl Makhtum) by Safiur Rahman Mubarakpuri is considered the best contemporary Seerah — it won the first prize at the Muslim World League competition in 1979. Online, SeekersGuidance.org offers free structured Seerah courses.
What duas did the Prophet ﷺ recite most frequently? +
Among the most frequently recited duas of the Prophet ﷺ are: Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan… (Quran 2:201), Allahumma inni a’udhu bika min al-hamm wal-hazan… (Bukhari 6369), and Ya Muqallib al-qulub, thabbit qalbi ‘ala dinik (Tirmidhi 3522). Explore our full collection of Masnoon Duas and Daily Duas with Arabic, transliteration, and sources.
Why is studying the Seerah important for Muslims today? +
The Seerah is the practical implementation of the Quran in human form. Allah ﷻ commanded believers to follow the Prophet ﷺ (Quran 33:21). Knowing the Seerah deepens love for the Prophet ﷺ, provides context for Quranic verses (asbab al-nuzul), gives practical guidance for family life, leadership, business ethics, and dealing with adversity, and is a source of spiritual strength. As the renowned scholar Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyyah said: “Whoever knows the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ truly knows Islam.”

“O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim…”
