What Is Hajj & Why Does It Matter?

Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam — an obligatory annual pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah that every adult Muslim who is physically and financially able must undertake at least once in their lifetime.

More than a journey, Hajj is a spiritual transformation. It re-enacts the trials of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his family, draws together Muslims from every nation, language, and background, and offers every pilgrim a profound opportunity for repentance, renewal, and closeness to Allah ﷻ.

In 2026 (1447 AH), the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah continues to refine its digital-first Nusuk platform, making registration, permitting, and logistics more streamlined than ever. This pillar hub page covers everything from confirmed dates and essential rituals to registration steps, packing lists, recommended duas, and authoritative external resources.

“And proclaim the Hajj to all people — they will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, arriving from every distant mountain pass.”

— Surah Al-Hajj, 22:27

~Tue 26 May 2026 · 9 Dhul-Hijjah — THE HEART OF HAJJ

🌅 Yawm Arafah — Day of Arafah

The most sacred day of the Islamic year. Pilgrims stand at the Plain of Arafat from after midday until sunset, supplicating, weeping, and seeking Allah’s mercy. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Hajj is Arafah.” (Tirmidhi). After sunset, pilgrims proceed to Muzdalifah for the night.

Eid al-Adha · Stoning · Sacrifice · Tawaf al-Ifadah

The greatest day of the Islamic calendar. Pilgrims perform Ramy al-Jamarat (stoning of the largest pillar), Qurbani (animal sacrifice), shave/cut hair, and return to Makkah for Tawaf al-Ifadah and Sa’i. They then return to Mina.

Ayyam al-Tashreeq — Days of Tashreeq

Pilgrims remain in Mina and stone all three Jamarat each day after midday. Those wishing to depart early may leave after stoning on 28 May (12 Dhul-Hijjah) before sunset. Remaining until the 13th earns greater reward.

🕋
Before Departure · Tawaf al-Wada

Farewell Tawaf (Tawaf al-Wada)

The final obligatory act before leaving Makkah. Pilgrims perform seven circuits of the Kaaba as a farewell. Departure window: from 31 May 2026 (14 Dhul-Hijjah). Many then travel to Madinah for Ziyarat (optional visits to sacred sites).

⚠️ All dates are estimates based on the Umm Al-Qura calendar. Final confirmation depends on official moon-sighting in Saudi Arabia. Always verify at hajj.nusuk.sa.

The 8 Essential Rituals of Hajj

Each ritual of Hajj carries profound symbolic meaning rooted in the Quran and Sunnah. Understanding the why behind each act deepens your spiritual connection.

🤍

1. Ihram

الإِحْرَامُ

The sacred state of consecration entered at the Miqat. Men wear two seamless white cloths; women dress modestly. Ihram represents the equality of all Muslims before Allah — no rank, no wealth, no status.

💡 Intention (niyyah) must be made clearly at the Miqat. Recite the Talbiyah: لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ
🕋

2. Tawaf al-Qudum

طَوَافُ الْقُدُومِ

Upon arriving in Makkah, pilgrims perform seven counter-clockwise circuits of the Kaaba. Begin and end at the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad). A moment of overwhelming awe and unity for every pilgrim.

💡 If possible, kiss or touch the Black Stone. If not, point to it and say “Allahu Akbar” with each pass.
🏃

3. Sa’i

السَّعْيُ

Seven back-and-forth walks between the hills of Safa and Marwah, commemorating Hajar (RA), the mother of Prophet Ismail (AS), in her desperate search for water — answered by the miraculous spring of Zamzam.

💡 Recite dua at Safa: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ (Quran 2:158)
🏕️

4. Mina (Yawm Tarwiyah)

مِنَى

Pilgrims travel to the tent city of Mina on 8 Dhul-Hijjah and spend the day and night there in remembrance of Allah. The city of Mina is less than 8km from the Masjid al-Haram.

💡 Shorten and combine prayers in Mina following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
🌄

5. Wuquf — Arafat

وُقُوفُ عَرَفَةَ

The spiritual pinnacle of Hajj. Standing on the Plain of Arafat on 9 Dhul-Hijjah symbolises the Day of Judgement. Allah descends (in a manner befitting His Majesty) and forgives all those present. Do not miss this.

⭐ This is the single most important moment of Hajj. Missing Arafat invalidates the entire Hajj.
🌌

6. Muzdalifah

الْمُزْدَلِفَةُ

After sunset at Arafat, pilgrims travel to Muzdalifah where they pray Maghrib and Isha together, sleep under the open sky, and collect 70 small pebbles for the Ramy ritual. A night of humility and gratitude.

💡 Elderly and weak pilgrims may depart Muzdalifah after midnight with a dispensation.
🪨

7. Ramy al-Jamarat

رَمْيُ الْجَمَرَاتِ

The symbolic stoning of the devil — pilgrims throw pebbles at three stone pillars representing the spots where Shaytaan tried to dissuade Prophet Ibrahim (AS). On Eid day, seven pebbles are thrown at the largest pillar (Jamarat al-Aqabah).

💡 Say “Bismillah, Allahu Akbar” with each of the seven throws. Stoning is permitted from midday until night.
🤲

8. Tawaf al-Wada

طَوَافُ الْوَدَاعِ

The Farewell Tawaf is the final obligatory act before leaving Makkah. Seven circuits of the Kaaba with a heart full of longing and gratitude — leaving behind a place that will never leave your heart.

💡 Make abundant dua during your final circuits. This may be your last time here in this life — make it count.

Essential Duas for Your Hajj Journey

These authentic duas, drawn from the Quran and Sunnah, are especially powerful during the days of Hajj — when the doors of acceptance are wide open.

Hajj 2026 — Frequently Asked Questions

Based on the Umm Al-Qura calendar, Hajj 2026 is expected to run from approximately Monday 25 May to Friday 29 May 2026 (8–12 Dhul-Hijjah 1447 AH), with the Day of Arafah on Tuesday 26 May and Eid al-Adha on Wednesday 27 May. These dates are estimates — final confirmation comes only after the official moon-sighting in Saudi Arabia, which is announced by Saudi authorities. Always verify at hajj.nusuk.sa.
Yes. Current Saudi regulations permit women to perform Hajj without a Mahram (male guardian) provided they travel as part of an official group or “safe delegation” available through the Nusuk platform. However, scholarly opinions vary, and it is recommended to consult a qualified Islamic scholar about the ruling applicable in your legal school of thought (madhhab) before booking.
The Meningococcal Meningitis (ACWY) vaccine is mandatory for all Hajj pilgrims. Additionally, Saudi authorities strongly recommend a seasonal flu vaccination and, depending on your country of origin, a Polio vaccination may also be required. Ensure all vaccination certificates are obtained well in advance and uploaded to your Nusuk account. Requirements can change, so verify with the Saudi Embassy or your country’s Hajj Ministry.
Costs vary significantly by country and package tier. Economy packages typically start from around USD $5,000–$7,000 from most countries, while standard and premium packages can range from $8,000–$15,000+. Packages include accommodation, transport between holy sites, group guidance, and some meals. Costs are influenced by departure country, hotel proximity to the Masjid al-Haram, and duration of stay. Compare packages from licensed operators on the Nusuk platform and your national Hajj Ministry.
Hajj is a compulsory pillar of Islam performed during the specific days of Dhul-Hijjah (8–13) each year, involving specific rites including Arafat, Muzdalifah, Mina, and the Jamarat. Umrah is a voluntary (highly recommended) lesser pilgrimage that can be performed at any time of year and involves only Ihram, Tawaf, and Sa’i. Umrah does not substitute for Hajj. Many Muslims perform Umrah before or after their Hajj journey.
Nusuk is the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah’s official digital platform for all Hajj registration, visa issuance, and package management for international pilgrims. Create an account using your passport details, select an approved Hajj package, complete payment, and receive your electronic Hajj visa through the platform. The companion Nusuk mobile app also provides tracking tools, health check-ins, virtual Hajj training, and real-time guidance during the pilgrimage.
Yes. The Prophet ﷺ said that fasting on the Day of Arafah (9 Dhul-Hijjah) expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year. This is one of the most recommended voluntary fasts in the Islamic calendar. However, note that pilgrims performing Hajj do not fast on this day — they need their energy for the rituals. The fast is especially recommended for those not performing Hajj that year.
وَأَتِمُّوا الْحَجَّ وَالْعُمْرَةَ لِلَّهِ

“Complete the Hajj and Umrah for the sake of Allah.”

Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:196

“Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or transgression will return [as pure] as the day his mother gave birth to him.”

— Prophet Muhammad ﷺ · Bukhari & Muslim

May Allah accept your Hajj, forgive your sins, and grant you the best in this world and the Hereafter. آمين
