The 5 Daily Prayers Explained

Understanding each Salah — its time, importance, and Rak’at

🌄

Fajr

صلاة الفجر

The pre-dawn prayer, performed before sunrise. Fajr time begins at true astronomical dawn (when Fajr twilight appears) and ends just before sunrise. It is one of the most virtuous prayers mentioned in the Quran.

2 Rak’at Fard + 2 Sunnah
☀️

Dhuhr

صلاة الظهر

The midday prayer, beginning after the sun passes its zenith. On Fridays, Dhuhr is replaced by Jumu’ah congregation prayer for men.

4 Rak’at Fard + 4+2 Sunnah
🌤️

Asr

صلاة العصر

The afternoon prayer. Asr time begins when an object’s shadow equals its height (Standard) or twice its height (Hanafi). It ends at sunset.

4 Rak’at Fard + 4 Sunnah
🌇

Maghrib

صلاة المغرب

The sunset prayer, beginning immediately after the sun sets below the horizon. It has the shortest valid time window of all five prayers.

3 Rak’at Fard + 2 Sunnah
🌙

Isha

صلاة العشاء

The night prayer, beginning when the twilight disappears. Its preferred time is before midnight, though it is valid until Fajr.

4 Rak’at Fard + 2 Sunnah + Witr

Tahajjud

صلاة التهجد

The voluntary night prayer performed in the last third of the night, after sleeping and before Fajr. A time when du’a is especially accepted.

2–12 Rak’at Nafl + Witr

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Islamic prayer times and how to use this calculator.

The five obligatory daily prayers are: Fajr (pre-dawn, 2 Rak’at), Dhuhr (midday, 4 Rak’at), Asr (afternoon, 4 Rak’at), Maghrib (sunset, 3 Rak’at), and Isha (night, 4 Rak’at). Each has a specific time window based on the sun’s position, which varies daily and by location.
Prayer times are based on the sun’s position relative to the Earth. As Earth orbits the sun throughout the year, the timing of sunrise, sunset, and twilight changes every day. This causes Fajr, Maghrib, and other prayer times to shift gradually, differing by as much as 1–2 hours across the seasons.
For Pakistan and South Asia, use University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi (18° Fajr, 18° Isha). This is the officially used method by most mosques and Islamic authorities in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. For Gulf countries, use Umm Al-Qura. For UK/Europe, use MWL. For USA/Canada, use ISNA.
In the Standard method, Asr begins when an object’s shadow equals its own height (plus noon shadow). In the Hanafi method, Asr begins when the shadow equals twice the object’s height — approximately 30–75 minutes later. Most mosques in Pakistan follow the Hanafi calculation.
This calculator uses the standard astronomical prayer time algorithm — the same mathematical foundation used by major Islamic prayer apps. For best accuracy, ensure correct coordinates (GPS), the right calculation method, and correct timezone. Times should match your local mosque within ±1–2 minutes.
Tahajjud is the voluntary night prayer performed in the last third of the night before Fajr. To calculate: divide the total night duration (Maghrib to Fajr) into three parts. The last third begins two-thirds into the night. Our calculator shows this time in the extra times section after you calculate.
Qibla direction is calculated using the Great Circle formula between your location and the Kaaba (21.4225°N, 39.8262°E), giving a bearing angle clockwise from True North. Use a compass and face that angle. In North America, Qibla faces northeast, which may seem counterintuitive but is the correct great-circle direction.
Yes — this calculator works worldwide. Enter any city name (e.g. “Manchester, UK” or “Toronto, Canada”) or use GPS. Always select the calculation method used by your local mosque for best accuracy. At extreme latitudes (above 65°N or below 48°S), consult a local Islamic authority for special adjustments.
