Why Dua Is the Essence of Worship

Dua is not a last resort — it is the core of the believer’s relationship with Allah ﷻ. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ described it as “the essence of worship,” and the Quran promises that Allah is always near and responsive to those who call upon Him sincerely.

What is the difference between dua and dhikr?
Dua (دعاء) is a direct request or supplication to Allah — asking for something specific. Dhikr (ذكر) is the remembrance of Allah through His names, praise, and glorification, without necessarily asking for anything. Many acts of worship combine both, such as beginning a dua with dhikr and praise before making a request.
Can I make dua in my own language instead of Arabic?
Yes. While Masnoon duas (those taught word-for-word by the Prophet ﷺ) are best recited in their original Arabic to preserve the exact wording and reward described in hadith, you are always free to supplement them with sincere, personal dua in your own language. Allah understands every language.
When are the best times for dua to be accepted?
Scholars highlight several especially blessed times: the last third of the night (Tahajjud), between the Adhan and Iqamah, the last hour of Friday (Jumu’ah), while fasting (especially at iftar), during rainfall, and while prostrating in Sujood. See our Tahajjud Dua guide for more.
Why does it sometimes feel like my dua isn’t being answered?
Scholars explain that Allah answers every sincere dua in one of three ways: granting the request directly, deflecting a harm equivalent to it, or storing its reward for the Hereafter. Patience, sincerity, halal sustenance, and avoiding sin all increase the likelihood of a dua’s swift acceptance.
