Fajr Morning Adhkar
🌅 Why Fajr Prayer Is the Greatest Victory

Fajr is the first of the five obligatory prayers — offered before sunrise when the world is still and the angels are present. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called it “the prayer witnessed” because the angels of night and day both attend the Fajr prayer. Waking for Fajr is considered one of the greatest acts of worship a Muslim can perform, yet it can be one of the most challenging.

“Whoever prays Fajr is under the protection of Allah. So, O son of Adam, beware lest Allah calls you to account for something from His protection.” — Sahih Muslim, Hadith 657 | View on Sunnah.com ↗

Making dua to wake up for Fajr — asking Allah directly for the blessing of rising before dawn — is a beautiful and proven practice of the Sunnah. The duas below cover three moments: before sleep (asking Allah to wake you), upon waking (praising Him), and in the morning after Fajr. Read all Masnoon Duas and Morning Prayers on DuaForAll.

DUA 01 · UPON WAKING
Dua Upon First Waking Up
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari

Al-ḥamdu lillāhil-ladhī aḥyānā ba’da mā amātanā wa ilayhin-nushūr

“All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection.”

✨ When to say it: This is the first dua to say the very moment you open your eyes — before getting out of bed, before checking your phone. It is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari (6312) and Sahih Muslim (2711). The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua as a reminder that waking from sleep is a minor resurrection — a gift from Allah.
DUA 02 · WAKING AT NIGHT
Dua When Waking in the Night for Fajr
📚 Sahih al-Bukhari

Lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamd, wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr. Al-ḥamdu lillāh, wa subḥānallāh, wa lā ilāha illallāh, wallāhu akbar, wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā billāh

“There is none worthy of worship but Allah, alone, without any partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He is able to do all things. Praise be to Allah, glory be to Allah, there is none worthy of worship but Allah, Allah is the Most Great, and there is no power and no strength except with Allah.”

✨ The reward: The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever wakes up at night and says this, then asks for anything of the good of this world or the Hereafter, it will be granted to him.” This is a powerful dua to say if you wake before Fajr and want to pray Tahajjud as well.
DUA 03 · QURANIC DUA
Dua to Be Steadfast in Prayer
📖 Quran 14:40

Rabbi ij’alnī muqīmaṣ-ṣalāti wa min dhurriyyatī, rabbanā wa taqabbal du’ā’

“My Lord, make me an establisher of prayer, and [many] from my descendants. Our Lord, and accept my supplication.”

✨ The wisdom: This is the dua of Prophet Ibrahim ﷺ, recorded in Surah Ibrahim (14:40). Recite this before sleeping as a sincere request to Allah to make you among those who guard their prayers — including the Fajr. It also includes one’s children, making it a dua for the whole family. DUA 04 · BEFORE SLEEP (INTENTION)
Dua to Ask Allah to Wake You for Fajr
📚 Abu Dawud

Allāhumma innī aslamtu nafsī ilayk, wa fawwaḍtu amrī ilayk, wa wajjahtu wajhī ilayk, wa alja’tu ẓahrī ilayk, raghbatan wa rahbatan ilayk

“O Allah, I have submitted my soul to You, entrusted my affairs to You, turned my face toward You, and laid myself down depending upon You — in hope and in fear of You.”

✨ Best time: Recite this before sleeping along with a sincere niyyah (intention) to wake for Fajr. The Prophet ﷺ said: “If you die on that night, you will die on the fitrah (natural state of Islam).” Entrusting your night to Allah includes asking Him to wake you for His prayer.
DUA 05 · AFTER FAJR
Morning Praise — Said After Fajr Prayer
📚 Sahih Muslim 2723

Aṣbaḥnā wa aṣbaḥal-mulku lillāh, wal-ḥamdu lillāh, lā ilāha illallāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-ḥamd, wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr

“We have entered the morning and the whole dominion belongs to Allah. Praise be to Allah. There is none worthy of worship but Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs the dominion, to Him belongs praise, and He is over all things powerful.”

✨ Complete it with: A dua after this is especially accepted. Once you have prayed Fajr and said this morning remembrance, stay in your place and engage in morning dhikr and tasbeeh until sunrise — the Prophet ﷺ highly recommended this.

💡 Practical Tips to Wake Up for Fajr

Beyond the dua, the Prophet ﷺ left us practical guidance. Combine sincere supplication with these Sunnah-inspired habits for consistent Fajr.

🌙
Sleep Early with Niyyah

The Prophet ﷺ disliked staying up late after Isha without need. Sleep by 10–11 PM with a firm intention to wake for Fajr — this niyyah itself is rewarded.

📿
Recite the Sleep Duas

Say Masnoon sleeping duas, Ayat al-Kursi, and the last three Quls before sleeping. The Prophet ﷺ guaranteed protection and sound sleep for those who do.

Set an Alarm + Ask Allah

Use the means available to you — set an alarm — while also making dua. Relying on means without dua is negligence; dua without means is laziness. Combine both.

💧
Do Wudu Immediately

The moment you wake, get up and do wudu. The Shaitan ties three knots on the back of your head — prayer breaks all three. Move before sleepiness returns.

👥
Wake Your Family Too

The Prophet ﷺ used to wake Aisha ؓ for the night prayer. Waking your spouse or children for Fajr earns extra reward. See Duas for Family.

🚫
Avoid Sins at Night

Ibn Mas’ud ؓ said that sins in the night deprive a person of Fajr. Guard your eyes, speech, and screen time after Isha to make waking for Fajr easier.

📖 Prophetic Guidance on Fajr

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ placed enormous emphasis on Fajr and the morning hours. He consistently linked early rising with barakah (blessing), productivity, and divine protection. Explore the Seerah of the Prophet ﷺ for more context on his daily Fajr routine.

“The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O Allah, bless my Ummah in its early mornings.’ Whenever he sent out a military detachment or army, he would send them at the beginning of the day.” — Sunan al-Tirmidhi 1212 | View on Sunnah.com ↗

The voluntary two rak’ahs of Fajr Sunnah — prayed before the obligatory prayer — carry such reward that the Prophet ﷺ never abandoned them even while traveling. For the complete collection of daily duas, morning and evening dhikr and tasbeeh, visit the respective pages on DuaForAll.

Frequently Asked Questions
The most specific dua to say upon waking for Fajr is: اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي أَحْيَانَا بَعْدَ مَا أَمَاتَنَا وَإِلَيْهِ النُّشُورُ — “All praise is for Allah who gave us life after having taken it from us, and unto Him is the resurrection.” This is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari (6312) and is the dua the Prophet ﷺ taught to be said the moment one wakes. You can also make personal dua before sleeping asking Allah to wake you for Fajr — dua is always accepted when sincere.
While there is no specific hadith-based dua exclusively for “waking for Fajr,” you can make sincere personal dua (du’a al-mas’alah) before sleeping asking Allah to wake you. Additionally, reciting the sleeping duas from the Sunnah — including Masnoon Duas for sleep, Ayat al-Kursi, and the last three Quls — is reported to bring protection and ease throughout the night. The Quranic dua of Ibrahim ﷺ (Quran 14:40) asking Allah to make him a steadfast prayer is highly recommended before sleep.
If you miss Fajr unintentionally (due to sleep or illness), you must pray it as soon as you wake — this is called qada (makeup prayer). The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever sleeps through a prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it” (Bukhari 597). There is no sin for unintentional missing, but the prayer must still be made up immediately. For habitual missing, sincere tawbah (repentance) and a firm commitment to improve is required. Read more on Islamic Knowledge for guidance on missed prayers.
Fajr begins at true dawn (subh sadiq) — when a white light appears horizontally across the horizon — and ends at sunrise. The time varies by location and season. Use DuaForAll’s Prayer Time Calculator to find exact Fajr times for your location. Scholars recommend praying Fajr at its earliest time (ta’jeel) to gain the greatest reward, though the entire window from dawn to sunrise is valid.
Absolutely — dua is the essence of worship (Tirmidhi 3370), and asking Allah for the tawfiq (divine enablement) to wake for Fajr is one of the most important things a Muslim can do. Allah says in the Quran: “Call upon Me; I will respond to you” (40:60). Combine dua with practical means (sleeping early, setting an alarm, avoiding late nights) — Islam teaches us to take the means while relying on Allah. Many Muslims report that sincere dua before sleep, combined with good sleep hygiene, transformed their ability to wake for Fajr consistently.
The Fajr Adhan includes the special phrase (As-salatu khayrun min an-nawm) — “Prayer is better than sleep” — said twice after “Hayya ‘ala al-falah.” This phrase, called tathwib, was instituted by the Prophet ﷺ for Fajr specifically and is one of the most iconic calls in Islam. It is a direct reminder to leave the comfort of sleep for the reward of prayer.
