01What Is Salawat / Durood Sharif?
Salawat (الصلوات) — commonly called Durood Sharif in South Asian usage — refers to invoking Allah’s blessings and peace upon Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Linguistically, “salah” from Allah means mercy and honour; from the angels it means seeking forgiveness; and from believers it means supplication for the Prophet’s ﷺ elevated status.
Reciting Durood is not merely a verbal formula — it is an act of worship that the Qur’an itself commands, and one of the few acts in which believers are asked to join Allah and His angels. Muslims recite Salawat during salah (in At-Tashahhud), after the adhan, on Friday, and as a standalone form of dhikr throughout the day.
02The Command in the Qur’an
Inna Allāha wa malā’ikatahu yuṣallūna ‘alan-Nabiyy, yā ayyuhal-ladhīna āmanū ṣallū ‘alayhi wa sallimū taslīmā.
“Indeed, Allah confers blessing upon the Prophet, and His angels [ask Him to do so]. O you who have believed, ask [Allah to confer] blessing upon him and ask [Allah to grant him] peace.” — Surah Al-Ahzab, 33:56
Scholars note that this ayah places sending Salawat in a unique category: Allah Himself, His angels, and the believers all participate together — unlike any other act of worship directed toward a created being.

06Best Times to Recite Durood Sharif
On Fridays
“Increase your Salawat upon me on Friday, for your Salawat is presented to me.” (Abu Dawud 1047, hasan). Many scholars encourage frequent Salawat throughout Friday, not a fixed count.
After the Adhan
Recite Durood after repeating the adhan and before making du’a — a Sahih Muslim narration links this to the intercession (shafa’ah) of the Prophet ﷺ.
In Every Salah
Durood-e-Ibrahim is recited in At-Tashahhud during the final sitting of every obligatory and voluntary prayer.
Before Du’a
Opening and closing a supplication with Salawat is a means by which du’a is more readily accepted, per multiple hadith narrations.
On Hearing His Name
Whenever the name “Muhammad ﷺ” is mentioned or written, saying “Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam” is recommended by consensus.
Morning & Evening Dhikr
Many scholars include Salawat within the daily morning and evening adhkar routine as a light, consistent practice.
07Etiquette of Reciting Salawat
- 1Recite with presence of heart and sincerity, reflecting on the meaning rather than rushing through the words.
- 2Use an authentic wording where possible — Durood-e-Ibrahim is the safest and most firmly established choice.
- 3Maintain wudu when possible, though Salawat may be recited without it, unlike recitation of the Qur’an by some fiqh views.
- 4There is no minimum or maximum count required — consistency (a small amount done regularly) is preferred by scholars over irregular large bursts.
- 5Avoid attributing specific miraculous numerical benefits (e.g. “removes exactly 70 hardships”) to unverified wordings — let the intention be sincere devotion, not a transactional formula.
