What Is the Day of Judgment (Yawm al-Qiyamah)?

The Day of Judgment — known in Arabic as Yawm al-Qiyamah (يَوْمِ ٱلْقِيَامَةِ, “The Day of Resurrection”), Yawm al-Din (“The Day of Recompense”), and Al-Akhirah (“The Hereafter”) — is the day on which all creation will be resurrected, judged for their deeds, and sent to their eternal abode: Jannah (Paradise) or Jahannam (Hell). Belief in this Last Day is not optional in Islamic theology; it is the sixth of the six pillars of Iman (faith), alongside belief in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and divine decree (Qadr).

The Quran refers to this event by more than a dozen names, each highlighting a different aspect of its reality: Yawm al-Hisab (Day of Reckoning), Yawm al-Fasl (Day of Judgment/Separation), As-Sa’ah (The Hour), and Al-Qari’ah (The Striking Calamity) among them. This repetition across the Quran’s 114 surahs — the Day of Judgment is mentioned, directly or indirectly, in over a third of the Quran’s verses — reflects its centrality to the Islamic worldview.

Unlike some theological traditions where the afterlife is treated as a vague or symbolic concept, Islamic scripture describes Qiyamah in vivid, specific detail: the blowing of the Trumpet, the splitting of the sky, the resurrection of every soul, the weighing of deeds, and the crossing of a Bridge over Hell. This guide walks through each stage with authentic sourcing from the Quran and Sahih Hadith.

Why Belief in the Last Day Matters

“Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the Angels, the Book, and the Prophets…”

— Quran · Surah Al-Baqarah 2:177

Belief in the Day of Judgment gives Islamic ethics its foundation. Every command and prohibition in Islamic law is anchored to eventual accountability before Allah — this life is understood as a temporary test (dunya), and the Hereafter (akhirah) as the true, permanent home. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The intelligent person is one who holds himself accountable and works for what comes after death.” (Tirmidhi, graded Hasan)

This belief shapes daily Muslim life in three concrete ways:

  • Moral accountability — every action, however small, is recorded and will be shown on the Day of Judgment (Quran 99:7-8)
  • Patience through hardship — worldly injustice is not the final word; ultimate justice is guaranteed in the Hereafter
  • Motivation for good deeds — righteous action (amal salih) is undertaken for eternal reward, not fleeting worldly gain

Minor Signs of Qiyamah (Ashrat as-Sa’ah as-Sughra)

The Prophet ﷺ described dozens of minor signs that would gradually appear before the Hour, many spanning long periods of time. Scholars generally hold that most minor signs have already occurred.

🕰️ Selected Minor Signs Described in Hadith

Not exhaustive — classical scholars catalogue over 100 narrated minor signs

📿

Loss of Knowledge

Religious knowledge decreases as scholars pass away (Bukhari 100)

🏗️

Tall Buildings

“Barefoot, naked shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings” (Sahih Muslim 8)

⏳

Time Passes Quickly

A year feels like a month, a month like a week (Tirmidhi 2332)

💰

Widespread Riba

Interest-based dealings become normalized and unavoidable (Abu Dawud 3331)

🗣️

Rise of Falsehood

Truth is suppressed while lying and betrayal of trust spread (Bukhari 6496)

🌍

Earthquakes Increase

Frequent earthquakes described as a sign of the approaching Hour (Bukhari 1036)

⚠️
A Note on Sign-Spotting

Islamic scholarship warns against sensationalism or confidently declaring specific current events as “proof” of imminent Qiyamah. The Prophet ﷺ himself said knowledge of the exact Hour belongs to Allah alone (Quran 7:187). These signs are for reflection and preparation, not prediction.

The 10 Major Signs Before the Hour

Narrated in a well-known hadith from Hudhayfah ibn Asid al-Ghifari (Sahih Muslim 2901), these ten major signs will appear close together, marking the final approach of the Hour.

١

Ad-Dukhan — The Smoke

A smoke that will envelop the earth

▼

Referenced in Surah Ad-Dukhan (44:10-11): “Then watch for the Day when the sky will bring a visible smoke, covering the people. This is a painful torment.” Scholars differ on whether this has already occurred in a limited form or remains a future major sign.

٢

Al-Masih ad-Dajjal — The False Messiah

The great trial (fitnah) before Qiyamah

▼

A one-eyed deceiver who will claim divinity and cause massive worldwide trial. The Prophet ﷺ warned every prophet cautioned their nation about him, calling him the greatest trial mankind will face (Sahih Muslim 2946). Muslims are taught to seek refuge from his trial in every prayer.

🤲 Related: Duas for Protection includes the prophetic supplication seeking refuge from the trial of the Dajjal.
٣

Descent of Prophet Isa (Jesus) ﷺ

Return to defeat the Dajjal

▼

Islamic belief holds that Prophet Isa (peace be upon him) was raised to the heavens and will descend near Damascus in the later days, defeat the Dajjal, and live as a just ruler following the teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ (Sahih Muslim 2937).

٤

Ya’juj and Ma’juj — Gog and Magog

Their release and destruction

▼

Mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf (18:94-99) and Surah Al-Anbiya (21:96), these are described as a vast people who will spread corruption on earth after being released from a barrier, before being destroyed by divine decree.

٥-٧

Three Great Landslides (Khusuf)

In the East, the West, and the Arabian Peninsula

▼

Three massive sinkings of the earth in different regions of the world, narrated in Sahih Muslim 2901, marking further approach of the Hour.

٨

Sunrise from the West

The closing of the door of repentance

▼

The Prophet ﷺ said: “The Hour will not be established until the sun rises from the west, and when it rises and the people see it, they will all believe. But that will be a time when believing will not benefit a soul who had not believed before.” (Sahih Bukhari 4635)

٩

Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard)

A creature that will speak to mankind

▼

Mentioned in Surah An-Naml (27:82), a creature will emerge and address people, marking that humanity’s period of being tested by faith in the unseen is drawing to a close.

١٠

A Fire from Yemen

Gathering mankind toward the place of final assembly

▼

The final major sign: a fire emerging from Yemen that will drive people toward the land of gathering (Sahih Muslim 2901), immediately preceding the blowing of the Trumpet.

The 7 Stages of the Hereafter

Islamic scripture describes a clear sequence of events from the moment of death to a person’s final abode. Understanding this sequence is essential to understanding Qiyamah as a whole.

Stage 1 · Al-Mawt

Death & the Angel of Death

The soul is taken by the Angel of Death (Malak al-Mawt) as decreed. This marks entry into the unseen realm and the first taste of the Hereafter (Quran 6:61).

Stage 2 · Al-Barzakh

The Intermediate Realm (Grave)

The barrier state between death and resurrection. The soul experiences either comfort or punishment based on deeds, and is questioned by two angels (Munkar and Nakir) about faith. See our full Dua for the Deceased guide.

Stage 3 · An-Nafkh fis-Sur

The Trumpet Is Blown

Angel Israfil blows the Trumpet twice: the first causes all creation to perish (Quran 39:68), the second — after an interval known only to Allah — resurrects every soul instantly.

Stage 4 · Al-Ba’th

Resurrection

Every human who ever lived is resurrected, body and soul reunited, and gathered on a vast, unfamiliar plain (Quran 75:3-4, 50:20-22).

Stage 5 · Al-Hashr

The Gathering

All humanity is gathered before Allah, described in hadith as barefoot, unclothed, and uncircumcised as they were first created (Sahih Bukhari 6527), standing under a sun brought near.

Stage 6 · Al-Hisab wal-Mizan

Reckoning & the Scale

Every deed is presented and weighed on the Mizan (Scale). Records of deeds are given — in the right hand for the successful, behind the back for the doomed (Quran 84:7-12).

Stage 7 · As-Sirat

The Bridge & Final Abode

Every soul crosses the Sirat, a bridge stretched over Hell. Believers cross safely to Jannah with varying speed based on deeds; others fall. See the Mizan and Sirat detailed below.

The Scale (Al-Mizan) & The Bridge (As-Sirat)

Two of the most vividly described events of the Day of Judgment — where deeds are weighed with perfect justice, and every soul must cross to reach Paradise.

GOOD BAD Al-Mizan The Scale of Deeds Gathering Jannah JAHANNAM BELOW As-Sirat The Bridge Over Hell
📖 QuranicAl-Anbiya 21:47

“And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. Even if it be the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth.”

📚 HadithBukhari & Muslim

“Two phrases light on the tongue, heavy on the Scale: SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi, SubhanAllahil-Adhim.” — the weight of good words on the Mizan, as taught by the Prophet ﷺ.

Crossing the Sirat

The Prophet ﷺ described the Bridge as “sharper than a sword and finer than a hair,” stretched over the top of Hell. Believers cross at speeds corresponding to their deeds — some like lightning, some like wind, some running, some crawling — while the disbelievers and severely sinful fall into Hell below (Sahih Muslim 183, part of the lengthy hadith on intercession).

Key Quranic Verses on the Day of Judgment

A selection of foundational verses describing the reality and certainty of the Last Day.

📖 Az-Zalzalah99:7-8

“So whoever does an atom’s weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom’s weight of evil will see it.”

📖 Al-Qari’ah101:1-5

“The Striking Calamity. What is the Striking Calamity? And what can make you know what is the Striking Calamity?”

📖 Al-Hajj22:1-2

“Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour is a terrible thing… you will see mankind intoxicated, but they will not be intoxicated — the punishment of Allah will be severe.”

📖 Al-A’raf7:187

“They ask you about the Hour: when is its arrival? Say: Its knowledge is only with my Lord… it will not come to you except unexpectedly.”

Preparing for the Day of Judgment

Belief in Qiyamah is meant to translate into action, not merely intellectual acceptance. The Quran and Sunnah outline clear, practical steps to prepare:

  • Sincere repentance (Tawbah) — turning back to Allah from sin before death arrives unexpectedly. See our guide on Dua for Forgiveness & Istighfar.
  • Consistent good deeds — the Prophet ﷺ emphasized small, regular deeds over occasional large ones (Sahih Muslim 782).
  • Fulfilling the rights of others — settling debts and disputes now, since on Qiyamah good deeds may be transferred to those we wronged (Sahih Bukhari 2449, the hadith of “the bankrupt”).
  • Regular remembrance of death — the Prophet ﷺ instructed: “Remember often the destroyer of pleasures [death]” (Tirmidhi 2307), as a means of maintaining perspective.
  • Dua for a good end (husn al-khatimah) — asking Allah for steadfastness in faith until the final breath.
🤲
A Prophetic Dua for the Hereafter

The Prophet ﷺ regularly asked Allah: “Allahumma inni as’aluka husnal-khatimah” — “O Allah, I ask You for a good ending.” Explore more supplications for the afterlife in our Dua for the Deceased and Masnoon Duas collections.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Day of Judgment

When will the Day of Judgment happen?

No one knows the exact timing except Allah. The Quran states explicitly in Surah Al-A’raf 7:187 that knowledge of the Hour rests solely with Allah, and it will come “unexpectedly.” Islamic teaching instructs believers to focus on personal readiness — through faith and good deeds — rather than date-setting or prediction, which the Prophet ﷺ discouraged.

What happens immediately after death in Islam?

The soul enters Al-Barzakh, an intermediate state between death and resurrection, where it is questioned by two angels about belief in Allah, the Prophet ﷺ, and one’s way of life. Depending on one’s faith and deeds, the grave becomes either a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of Hell until the Day of Resurrection. See our detailed Dua for the Deceased guide for the full picture and supplications for the departed.

Is belief in the Day of Judgment a pillar of Islam or a pillar of faith?

It is one of the six pillars of Iman (faith), not one of the five pillars of Islam (which are actions: Shahada, Salah, Zakat, Sawm, Hajj). The pillars of Iman are belief in Allah, His Angels, His Books, His Messengers, the Last Day, and Divine Decree (Qadr) — as outlined in the famous Hadith of Jibril (Sahih Muslim 8).

What is the Mizan (Scale) and how does it work?

The Mizan is a literal scale established on the Day of Judgment on which every deed — good and bad — is weighed with perfect divine justice, as described in Surah Al-Anbiya 21:47. No soul will be wronged by even an atom’s weight. Some deeds, though small in worldly effort, carry immense weight — the Prophet ﷺ specifically mentioned phrases of dhikr like “SubhanAllahi wa bihamdihi” as heavy on the Scale (Sahih Bukhari 6406).

What is the Sirat (Bridge) in Islam?

The Sirat is a bridge stretched over Hell that every person must cross to reach Paradise, described in hadith as “sharper than a sword, finer than a hair.” Believers cross at speeds corresponding to the strength of their faith and deeds, while wrongdoers fall into Hell below (Sahih Muslim 183). Crossing it safely is part of what believers ask for in dua.

What are the major signs before the Day of Judgment?

According to a hadith narrated in Sahih Muslim 2901, the ten major signs are: the Smoke, the Dajjal (False Messiah), the descent of Prophet Isa (Jesus) ﷺ, Ya’juj and Ma’juj (Gog and Magog), three major landslides (east, west, and Arabia), the sun rising from the west, the Beast of the Earth, and a fire emerging from Yemen that gathers people together.
